Why Is There Still Stigma Around Mental Health?

Research estimates that around 60% of adults struggling with mental health issues don’t seek help. Studies also show that one of the most common reasons for people not seeking help is the negative stigma/perception surrounding the need for help with one’s emotional well-being. This stigma can originate from ourselves or others.

Synchronous Health Specialist, LMFT, Karen Brimeyer notes “Mental Health is still so stigmatized, and it is often still perceived as a bad thing or weakness to struggle with emotional well-being. It is often assumed that with emotional issues, we’ll just get over them, though we don’t assume the same with a heart condition or other physical ailment. Let’s change the perception by talking about different disorders, and how therapists can help in the same we see a physical therapist or doctor helping.”

98% of people agree that people with mental health issues experience negative stigma from those around them. So what are some ways you can help break this stigma?

Seek help. Whether you deal with emotional issues yourself or know someone does, there is help and there is hope. Maury is offering the SyncTALK program to meet you and your colleagues wherever you may be emotionally.

Talk about it. If you do seek help with your emotional well-being, talk about it. With your friends, family, colleagues, or whoever you may feel safe enough to discuss with. To break a stigma, no awareness effort is too small. Talk about the program with your peers, and ask your HR dept or manager for more information or visit the site below.
