Research shows that over 50% of Americans have experienced major loss over the last several years. According to the US Census Bureau, there were almost 3.5 million deaths in America in the year 2020 alone. Whether we like it or not, Grief & Loss are a part of our experience while here on earth.
Synchronous Health Specialist Nadia Aquino notes, “Grief is a natural response to loss. Loss is an inevitable part of the human experience, yet we can still feel shock and sadness when loss comes into our life. Mourning takes time and research shows that it can also promote a new sense of meaning that gives purpose and direction to life.”
Though certainly one of the primary causes of grief in life, the loss of a loved one (including pets), is only one of many types of grief we can experience. Some of the other forms include:
- Loss of a relationship, be it romantic, friendship or family
- Loss of a job or financial security
- Changes in health or the health of a loved one
- Adjustments to change in one’s career, family, friend group, location, etc.
The above isn’t intended to be a downer, but rather more of a motivator as there are healthy and hopeful ways you can navigate and process through grief and loss in your life.
