Emotions happen, and they mean you’re human. According to research, we experience at least one emotion 90% of the time in life, and on any given day we can experience a full range from joy to sadness, and everything in-between. The good news is, emotions are part of what make us human, and allowing ourselves to feel them can serve as a significant awareness indicator for where we are in life. Expression of our emotions is key in how our relationships and pursuits play out each day.
Synchronous Health Specialist Nadia Aquino notes, “Expressing our emotions in a healthy way benefits us in many ways, such as reducing stress, improving confidence, and reducing symptoms of depression. Before we can express our emotions in a healthy manner, we must have awareness of them. One of the first steps in understanding our emotions is accepting that all emotions are normal.”
As Nadia mentions, the difference between expressing our emotions in healthy or negative ways is all about awareness. When we’re aware, we have room to take a breath and respond meaningfully as opposed to reacting in what may be a heated initial moment. The good news about breath and response is that they can be quick and in flow with your day.
So how can we get into a posture of healthy emotional expression?
- Pause and breathe.
- Feel the emotion, consider the situation and the outcome from what you might say or do.
- Respond after considering the above.
- Practice/Repeat whenever emotions arise.
Though it may seem like a lot, all the above can be done quickly in the flow of your day. Take it easy on yourself and give it a try.
